ANIME

The term Anime (a-nuh-may) is a Japanese colloquialism used as an abbreviation for the term “animation.”

In Japan, the word Anime is synonymous with animation of any kind from anywhere. Worldwide, however, Anime typically refers to hand-drawn and computer-generated animation produced in Japan.

Anime-influenced animation describes animation created outside of Japan that has elements of Japanese animation.

Aside from original content, Anime frequently incorporates translations of Japanese light novels, video games, and Manga. It is classified into various genres that appeal to both general and niche audiences.

Anime has a very distinctive art style which sets it apart from other animation styles. The first Japanese commercial animations appeared in 1917. The most well-known anime is Namakura Gatana (The Dull Sword), a film with a four-minute runtime produced by Jun'ichi Kōuchi in 1917. It tells the story about a foolish rōnin who purchased a dull-edged sword and his subsequent attempts at tsujigiri.

Circa the 1960s, cartoonist Osamu Tezuka, modified and simplified Disney Animation Style (Cel Animation). His goal was to cut expenses and minimize frame counts in his films. They were initially meant to be a temporary measure to produce content within a short timeframe with an inexperienced workforce.

But over the decades, many of his animation techniques ended up defining the look of the medium. His techniques and working processes resulted in a distinctive art form which has flourished and gained sizable domestic acceptance and following.
