MANHWA

Manhwa is the Korean equivalent of Japanese Manga and Chinese Manhua. The word Manhwa is the general Korean term for comics and print cartoons. Outside Korea, the term usually refers to South Korean comics.

The author or artist of a Manhwa is called a Manhwaga. Whereas a Manga artist or writer is called a Mangaka and a Manhuajia is someone who creates Manhua through drawing or writing.

Manhwa art is distinct from Manga and Manhua. Characters' bodies frequently have realistic proportions, but their faces usually don't. Manhwas also feature intricate and beautiful backgrounds with highly detailed attire on their protagonists.

Animations based on Korean comics are still relatively rare. Priest, a Manhwa by Hyung Min-woo was translated then later adapted into an American sci-fi action horror film by Screen Gems. Secretly, Greatly, a film based on a Manhwa webtoon, became a top-grossing film in 2013. In 2020, Tower of God, The God of High School, and Noblesse received Japanese adaptations via Crunchyroll. In the same year, Sweet Home was adapted to a live-action series by Netflix. Solo Leveling and Why Raeliana Ended up in the Duke’s Mansion are both receiving Anime adaptations. Source

The term Manhwa is often used synonymously with Webtoons. This is because there is a very popular website called Webtoon that lets users read Manhwas for free (conditional) on their website or through their App.
